Supporting you during some of your most precious moments...
What is a Doula?
A doula is a trained helper and friend to a pregnant woman during the prenatal, labor and postpartum periods. Her main goals are to educate on pregnancy and childbirth, ensure that a mother feels safe, comfortable, and confident during labor and delivery, and help the mother settle into a routine with her new baby. She will nurture, protect, comfort, educate, advocate, encourage, and be a companion during some of a woman’s most precious moments in life.
Our personal view of a doula is that she is a handmaiden who serves a woman during her most vulnerable moments, loving on her, supporting her, comforting her, fighting for and interceding for her, and being a voice for her when she cannot speak.
Why use a Doula?
There are many reasons why you may want to use the services of a doula in pregnancy and childbirth. You may want a friend who is educated in birth work, someone who can help educate you on birth and what to plan for and expect, who can capture your precious moments through photography, a spokesperson who will advocate for what you want or need during delivery, or a woman who will help ensure that you are as comfortable and happy as possible in the experience.
Studies have also shown that having a professional birth companion resulted in:
- 60% fewer requests for epidurals
- 50% fewer caesarean sections
- 30% reduction in the use of pain medication
- 25% reduction in labor length
- Increased rates of breastfeeding at 6 weeks postpartum
- Higher self-esteem and less depression at 6 weeks postpartum
"Birth can be messy and unpredictable, but that doesn't prevent it from being beautiful."
